Opponents of same-sex marriage have many arguments as to why same-sex marriage should not be legal. There are ten arguments written at NoSameSexMarriage.com that explain why opponents of same-sex marriage think it should not be legalized. The first is because families will be decayed by same-sex marriage. According to the site, “If it continues, almost every child will have several ‘moms’ and ‘dads,’ perhaps six or eight ‘grandparents,’ and dozens of half-siblings” (“Gay Marriage: Why Would It Affect Me?” ). This will be detrimental to children, although heterosexual couples can also have blended families due to divorce and remarrying. TFP Student Action, a student organization that seeks to uphold traditional family values, argues that same-sex marriage will always leave a child either motherless or fatherless. They believe this “ignores a child’s best interests,” but no mention is made of the heterosexual single parents who already raise children with either only a mother or a father (“10 Reasons Why Homosexual “Marriage” is Harmful and Must be Opposed”).
The second argument is that gay marriage will lead to polygamy. If the United States allows homosexual couples to marry, they will soon have requests that people want to legalize polygamist relationships in which multiple people are married to each other (“Gay Marriage: Why Would It Affect Me?”). Opponents of gay marriage have also suggested that if gay marriage is legalized people will want to marry animals next (Goode). A third argument is that once marriage has been redefined to allow same-sex couples, states will not protect marriage the same way they do now. Divorces will be granted instantly and marriage will no longer matter (“Gay Marriage: Why Would It Affect Me?”).
Another argument is that the legalization of gay marriage will teach children perversion. If gay marriage is legalized, schools and textbooks will be required to show children that a marriage between two women or two men is acceptable. The fifth argument listed is that in adoption cases, traditional couples will not be favored over same-sex couples. If gay marriage is legalized, children may be placed in a home with a married gay couple. The child will grow up either fatherless or motherless. Furthermore, parents will have to accept that their children are homosexuals. The article describes how foster parents would have to go through sensitivity training so as to not be biased towards traditional marriage if their foster children are homosexual. The seventh argument raised by the article is that gay marriages will “overburden” the government (“Gay Marriage: Why Would It Affect Me?”). If gay marriage is legalized, it will cost the country billions of dollars in Social Security benefits (“Gay Marriage: Why Would It Affect Me?”).
Furthermore, opponents of gay marriage argue that if the United States legalizes gay marriage, it will spread to other countries. Other countries look to us for direction on legal decisions and we will spread gay marriage throughout the world. The final two arguments involve religion. If the United States legalizes gay marriage, the spreading of the word of the Lord will be “hindered” and traditional values will not be passed down in generations of families (“Gay Marriage: Why Would It Affect Me?”). Finally, the legalization of gay marriage in the United States will make our culture “anti-Christian” even though the United States allows freedom of religion and is not strictly a Christian culture now (“Gay Marriage: Why Would It Affect Me?”).
